You read that right: WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram will soon be interconnected. That means users of the three different platforms will soon be able to message one another.
In case you have ever had any doubts about it, this is the endgame. This move by Facebook will pretty much chase everyone else out of the messaging game. And then we can welcome the world to a new age of where Facebook controls all of our instant messaging.
To be sure, it is a cool thing. If I were running Facebook, I’d do the same thing. Why should all those people not be able to talk to one another just because they are on different platforms?
Imagine a world in which Gmail users cannot mail Yahoo mail users and Outlook email users. Horrible.
The problem is that in this case, instant messaging has been fragmented right from the foundation, and it will take the clout of a giant like Facebook to make interconnectivity between platforms possible.
What I am guessing is that Facebook is not exactly going to be interested in this interconnectivity with IM platforms not under its own umbrella. And ultimately, that will mean death for most of them.
On the other hand, perhaps Telegram needs to initiate discussions with Skype and BlackBerry Messenger and others right away to work towards those getting interconnected too. Only then might they have a fighting chance of facing off this tsunami that is about to hit their world.
A New York Times report spells it out:
The services will continue to operate as stand-alone apps, but their underlying technical infrastructure will be unified, said four people involved in the effort. That will bring together three of the world’s largest messaging networks, which between them have more than 2.6 billion users, allowing people to communicate across the platforms for the first time.
WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram users being able to message one another is going to be huge. There is no question about that.
