Android 5.1

Android 5.1 update has been officially announced by Google. This is the latest version of Lollipop. Here are the new features:

  1. support for multiple SIM cards – you use more than one SIM card on a device with multiple SIM slots, so its easier to share your phone with a family member or better manage your mobile costs
  2. Device Protection – your lost or stolen device will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account even if someone resets your device to factory settings
  3. high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones – crystal clear calling with HD Voice between compatible Android 5.1 devices
  4. control your paired Bluetooth devices directly from Quick Settings
  5. join Wi-Fi networks directly from Quick Settings
  6. stability and performance improvements

The update should start rolling out any time from now, so keep an eye on your Nexus or Android One device for a software update notification.

  1. no groundbreaking new features but that’s to be expected, Android is more mature so feature addition will be in drops rather than deluges. wonder if/when the Chinese OEMs that rule in these parts will provide updates to this version

  2. I think I like that device protection feature more. It might not be much but it’s a lot.

  3. not an impasse per se, but maturity means new features will be incremental rather than exponential. most of the important (and some of the not so important) features are already implemented. the ones that are yet to be implemented are held back by software/hardware engineering issues, as these obstacles are surmounted with advances in technology, these features will be added one after the other

  4. Thank You! Even my kid brother can wipe an android phone and make it his today. It’s a much needed feature in terms of security!
