How to Link and Unlink similar tiles on the Windows Phone homescreen

Save for the low-res camera, my experience with the Microsoft Lumia 430 Dual SIM has been awesome. Just recently, by chance I learnt this new trick and thought to share with you guys. You see, for a dual SIM Lumia device, you have separate tiles for Calls and SMS.

Tiles

One for each SIM, which totals to 4 tiles (see screenshot above). These plenty tiles take up space that would’ve accommodated other apps. Below are simple steps to merge the Calls and SMS tiles for both lines.

How To Link Phone Tiles

  • Open the Calls tile and Press the 3-dot menu at the lower right hand side.
  • Select “link tiles”.
  • A new menu appears and you click on ‘link’.
  • That’s all.

Tiles

Follow same steps to link Message tiles too. Notice the merged Phone and Messaging tiles.

How To UnLink Phone Tiles

Microsoft has removed the ability to unlink linked Phone tiles in its latest updates. The procedure to unlink Phone tiles used to be as follows:

  • Open the Phones tile and press the 3-dot menu at the lower right corner.
  • Select “Unlink tiles”.
  • A new menu appears and you tap on ‘Unlink’.
  • That’s all. You now have two Phone tiles again.

You can still unlink phone tiles though through a more tedious procedure, as follows:

  • Backup your Contacts, Messages, WhatsApp, etc.
  • Do a soft reset
  • Reinstall your apps and restore your backup Contacts, Messages, et al.

Crazy, yes. But that is the only way to unlink linked Phone tiles for now.

However, you can still unlink Messaging tiles easily. Follow these steps:

  • Open the Messages tile and press the 3-dot menu at the lower right hand side.
  • Select “Unlink tiles”.
  • A new menu appears and you tap on ‘Unlink’.
  • That’s all. You now have two Messages tiles again.
