Recently, Ayo Alli left Eskimi to pursue some new projects. Ayo is no stranger to the Nigerian mobile terrain, having been a player for several years. Recently, spoke on Skype. We discussed his work and experience at Eskimi, his plans and upcoming projects, as well as the mobile ecosystem in Nigeria.
I will not bore you with all the details of our chat, but rather present two key nuggets that anyone in the mobile industry can find useful.
Need to Leverage the non-tech economy
One of the things that Ayo said was that tech people need to move away from internal conversations within the Twitterati to a wider demographic or audience.
This struck a cord with me immediately because I have been repeating this ad nausea. Tech people are talking only to tech people. When a developer’s product is published on the average tech blog, its the same circle of tech people who read it. Meanwhile this is a very limited circle.
We need to engage outside our circle. If we don’t, we aren’t going to move the critical mass needed for the success of our products and services.
Ayo hit that point home clearly in our discussion. As a matter of fact, I believe that this point is the single most important for us at this time.
Lesson to Developers
Ayo Alli also had a message for young developers: “If you want to be successful, step out of your comfort zone.”
Developers are comfortable with the apps and services that they use. Yet, their market use (or are interested in) a different set of apps and services. Developers need to step outside of what they are familiar with and try other things.
Ayo wouldn’t discuss what his new project is yet, but promised to let us know as soon as its ready for unveiling. Here’s wishing him god speed.
