There have been a number of mythical smartphones that have made the rounds over the years. The myth of the Nokia Edge is one of the most resilient that we have seen. Sometime in 2018, perhaps even 2017, certain tech blogs began to publish rumoured specifications of an upcoming smartphone from HMD Global called Nokia Edge.
It was initially rumoured in 2018 that the Edge would have a 5.2″ IPS LCD display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, 3600mAh battery, and run Android 7 Nougat. It would also have a 23 megapixel main camera. There has been no mention of Zeiss optics.
According to the initial reports, the Edge would be launched in August 2019. But, over a year after, it is yet to see the light of day.
Updated Nokia Edge 2019 Specifications and Release Date
In 2019, another set of specs for the rumoured Nokia Android phone began to make the rounds. The upgraded specs for the Nokia Edge 2019 include a Super AMOLED display of 5.8″ or 6.1″, dual 32MP camera, 8GB RAM (some sources say 10GB RAM), 6300mAh (or 6700mAh) Battery, and 5G network support. So, while the “original” Edge was a cheap Android phone, the upgraded specifications point to a more expensive device.
From the “leaked” images, the Edge 2019 would have an in-display fingerprint scanner.
Naturally, the Nokia Edge 2019 would be launched in…you guessed right…2019. But 2019 is pretty much over and HMD Global has not announced an Edge. It is time to kill any expectations that the Nokia Edge 2019 is a real thing. Time to move on.
Nokia Edge 2020, anyone?
We didn’t think it would a surprise to see rumoured specs of a Nokia Edge 2020 – and perhaps with even more bumped up specs and features. And true to form, I found concept renders and predicted specs making the rounds already.
If the rumour mill is to be believed, Nokia Edge 2020 will supposedly have 10GB of RAM and be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, and run Android 11 out of the box (nevermind that Android 10 has barely just been released). Other features include a 64-megapixel triple main camera, 32-megapixel front camera, 4320 mAh battery with 45W fast charging and 25W fast Qi wireless charging.
Those are impressive specs and the concept renders do not look bad either. But are they based on any tangible leaked info, or are they just the work of the imagination of a fan that wants to keep the dream of the Edge alive? As far as I can tell, it is more like the latter. No-one has come out to say specifically that they have seen a pre-release version of the phone.
All we have appear to be cooked up images and specifications.
Will the Nokia Edge ever see the light of day?
It is increasingly difficult to believe that the Nokia Edge exists in HMD Global’s plans and that it will ever be available in the market. The rumours have run through a cycle of about two years now. That is a long time in the world of smartphones.
But then, who really knows? It just might be a matter of time. Nokia Edge ranks side-by-side the Nokia C1 as one of the most rumoured Android phones of all times, and the C1 was finally announced in December 2019. So, the Nokia Edge might not be too far away. We just might get an announcement and see it in the market soon enough.
Whether or not we ever see an official announcement of the Edge, it is clear that there is a group of individuals vested in keeping images of this mythical Android phone floating around the Web.
