The story of Jolla, the Finnish company behind Sailfish OS, has just gone from bad to worse. Late last year, the company did a heavy restructuring, laying off 50% of their staff. As it stands, the company plans to ship the already made 540 tablets they have in stock to early Indiegogo backers while the rest of the backers will get back their money. Here are key information about their current plans, as published on the Jolla blog:
- Ship remaining Tablets to Indiegogo backers: we will ship 540 units as soon as we can starting from February. This was already mentioned in Juhani’s New Year’s greeting. We realize that this is just a small portion and does not help in resolving the overall situation.
- Refund the remaining Indiegogo contributors: Jolla aims to refund the total contribution, including shipping and all accessories. Due to the financial constraints, this will happen in two parts: half of the refund will be done during Q1/2016, and the other half within a year, our financial situation permitting.
It is sad to see another smartphone platform fizzle out into thin air. Despite excitement from fans and enthusiasts, Jolla OS never gained traction in the smartphone market. Whenever it dies off, it will not be missed by many.
