GPS

Life is an odd thing. With all of the technology at our disposal, we can probably track and locate a missing smartphone in a matter of minutes. But a jumbo jet – something that huge – has been missing for days (over a week now). It is about time that mobile technology invades aeronautics.

A simple matter of putting remote GPS tracking systems in place, it seems so that its location is constantly being transmitted. Yes; that – and making sure that on commercial aircraft, they cannot be turned off.

  1. A simple matter of putting remote GPS tracking systems in place, it seems. Yes; that – and making sure that on commercial aircraft, they cannot be turned off.

It looks simple enough to achieve but in reality it is not. For whatsoever a man builds, another has learned to destroy it. The biggest security agencies in the world have been hacked at one time or the other.

We sometimes take for granted how big and uncharted our world truly is, one could easily disappear from the face of the earth if he so chooses. Locating the large jet plane should look easy enough and should be if it was missing on a continental landmass like the USA where they have sophisticated technology in place but in the Pacific ocean particularly around the third world countries where these technologies is not readily available.
At the moment finding this jet plane if it was truly an act of terrorism would be almost impossible considering the alleged terrorist have had an ample amount of time to conceal their tracks

  2. Martinkem,

I disagree. GPS is available everywhere and so cheap and compact that we put it into tiny N15,000 budget smartphones. We really don’t need sophisticated technology as obtains over land masses like the USA. I cannot come up with one good reason why GPS systems are not currently deployed on commercial aircraft.

  3. The point i was trying to make is that GPS devices can be turned off or disabled if the terrorist knows how the system works, just like taking the battery out of a cellphone would make the GPS in a cellphone useless.

  4. I learnt that by default, all Boeing Plans are linked to a Satellite Tracking Service, however the service is not a mandatory service to airbus owners as they may decide not to renew the service after the initial expiration. On this very missing plan, the service was not subscribe for, otherwise the satellite tracking and communication equipment will have be of help.

  5. Another limitation may be that all GPS have dedicated network as a medium of transmission which may not be available everywhere
