The Kenya Smartphone Market Share Q1 2019 report from CounterPoint Research is out and it says that 7 of the top 10 best-selling smartphones in Kenya are TECNO, Infinix, and itel. While Samsung retains the number two position, Transsion’s smartphones are clearly dominating the Kenyan market. They captured a whopping 43% during the period.
- TECNO – 20%
- Samsung – 15%
- Infinix – 13%
- itel – 10%
- Huawei – 8%
- Others – 34%
As you can deduce from the above, the top five phone companies together have a hold on a whopping 66% share of the total smartphone market. This leaves other brands like Nokia, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Apple, sharing the remainin 34% market share.
The report states what we already know – that kenya is a price-sensitive market and most smartphone purchases happen in the sub-$100 category. TECNO, Infinix, and itel have a strong footing in that segment, as well as the $100 – $200 segment.
The Kenya Smartphone Market Share Q1 2019 states that the sub-$100 market segment cover 69% of smartphone shipments in the country, which is no surprise to anyone who knows the purchasing power of the average Kenyan.
While there is fresh competition in Kenya from fellow Chinese brands like OPPO and Xiaomi, those new brands do not have a strong portfolio in those segments. It is likely that Transsion’s models will continue to dominate the market.
