Tablet sales have seen a significant growth since the second quarter of this year, as market shares of tablets around the world grew 11% to 49.3 million units. All sold in just the second quarter of 2014.
Though there has been significant increase in sales this year, the tablet market saw a sequential drop of 1.5% in the first three months of the year. Research analyst at IDC, Jean Phillipe Bouchard, attributed some of the causes of slow tablet sales to the ever growing size of smartphone screens and the fact that many tablet owners tend to upgrade their tablets only after a long period of time.
Apple still leads the way in tablet sales, with 13.3 million iPads in the second quarter, struggling to finish behind is Samsung. Coming from behind to over take Asus is Lenovo who finished third with 2.4 million in sale and 4.9% in global tablet market. Asus and Acer finished fourth and fifth with 4.6% and 2% respectively.
The researchers at IDC also noted that many PC and phone manufacturing companies have turned to manufacturing tablets and have also been gaining in the tablet market.Tecno and Infinix I know will also be gaining in this increase in tablet sales especially in Nigeria.
