Nothing Phone 2a: Glyph, IR Blaster, aptX, Wifi 6 – A Super Guide

Nothing Technology appears to be following in the footsteps of Apple and Google – announce and release a handful of premium models each year, along with one budget model. The company had released the Nothing Phone (2) already back in July 2023, and now, we have rumours of a Nothing Phone 2a, supposedly a budget model, an affordable version of the Phone 2.

Nothing Phone 2a Specs

Here are some of the rumoured specs and features of the Phone (2a) model:

  • It will have a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a center hole-punch camera and a 120Hz refresh rate.
  • It will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor, a custom mid-range 5G chipset that Nothing says it co-engineered with MediaTek. It is essentially a tweaked Dimensity 7200.
  • In the memory department, it is equipped with 8GB and 12GB RAM and 128GB and 256GB storage.
  • The rear camera is said to have two 50MP lenses.
  • In front is a 32MP selfie camera.
  • It will feature a three-part Glyph system on the back, which is a transparent panel that displays notifications and other information. However, the Glyph system will be scaled-back compared to the Nothing Phone (2), which has a four-part Glyph system.
  • It will run on a clean and minimalistic version of Android, with no bloatware or ads – Nothing OS 2.5 based on Android 14.
  • The battery capacity is 4900mAh.
  • Charging technology is 45W fast charge.
  • It will likely be launched at the MWC trade show in Barcelona on February 27, 2024.

We don’t have any clear image of what the 2a will look like, but we do have some leaked images[1] that give an idea. Here is a close-up look at the rear camera module:

Nothing Phone (2a)

Is the idea of a Nothing Phone (2a) a good one? I think so. There are many people who want a taste of the Nothing experience. If the rumours turn out to be true, how it is priced is what will determine how well it sells.

What is the Glyph system used in Nothing Phones?

A glyph system is a term that can have different meanings depending on the context. In the context of the Nothing Phone, it is a form of data visualisation for notifying a user of the phone of an activity e.g. an incoming call, incoming SMS, etc.

In data visualization, a glyph system is a collection of visual objects that are used to display data. A glyph is any marker, such as an arrow or a circle, that can encode information by its shape, color, size, position, etc. In the case of Nothing Phones, the back cover of the phone uses a glyph system of arrows and symbols to display notifications.

Does Nothing Phone 2a have a Glyph system?

Like other Nothing phone models, the Phone 2a has a Glyph system. However, it is not as extensive as what obtains on the Phone 1 and Phone 2

Does Nothing Phone 2a have an IR blaster?

Not at all. This phone does not have an IR blaster.

Does Nothing Phone 2a support aptX codecs?

It supports aptX Adaptive, aptX JD, and aptX Low Latency.

Does it support WiFi 6?

Yes, the Phone 2a supports WiFi 6.

What is the price of Nothing Phone (2a)?

How much will the Nothing Phone (2a) cost? I have no idea at this time. Rumours say to expect a price tag in the region of €349 for the 8/128GB storage variant and €399 for the 12/256GB storage variant. We will just have to wait and see, as more details arrive and ultimately at the official announcement.

U.S. Availability

Nothing has stated that the 2a model will not be available to the public in the United States, so you won’t be able to buy it off the shelf at any retailer or from your carrier. It will likely be available in a restricted way to developers in the US.

Nothing Phone 2a will be announced globally on the 2nd of March 2024.
